Expose your plants to Air

The first thing to do when you have your plug plant is give it some air. Plug plants need plenty of air, so this should be the first thing to do when you have them. When you receive the plant also check if the compost is dry or whether the plant is weak. If you notice any of these, place them in stand them in a saucer of fresh, room-temperature allowing water to soak it up through the base. When they become damp, place them in a dry saucer so an excess amount of water can drain. This will allow your plant to do well for several days before you decide to plant them.

How to Plant Plugs in Potting Compost

Planting plugs requires you to initially use containers before transferring them. Once you decide to plant them, put the plug plants in pots. This involves the right size containers which should not be too large compared to the plug plant. Larger containers have their disadvantages such as slower growing time and more moisture which can kill your plant. Therefore, your pot size should be moderate.  Once you find the right-sized pot, you can start planting plugs right away. Begin by filling the container with high-grade compost bought from a store. Next level the surface of the compost, then use a chopstick or anything similar to put a hole in the middle of each of your containers. Use these holes to fill in the plug plants and hold them into place using your fingers. After planting your plugs, ensure to water them at least twice a day. One rule to follow about planting plug plants indoors is to keep them away from direct sunlight.

How to Plant Plugs Outdoors

Under the right conditions, your plugs grown indoors will develop plenty of leaves and become strong which means they are now ready to be sent outdoors. Hardy perennials have no specific season where they are planted, however tender plants should only be planted during spring. To plant plugs outdoors, acclimatize them by moving the plug plants outdoors during the day and sending them back indoors at night. You can also allow the plug plants to spend the whole outside for them to acclimatize to the nightly temperatures of your garden. Once they have adapted to the daily and nightly conditions of your garden, you can begin planting plugs outdoors.

How to grow freshly planted plugs

The easiest part about plug plants is planting them but when it comes to growing them you have to be at your best. However, beginner growers shouldn’t worry as persistence is key. Growing plug plants requires vital care for the plants to reach their optimum. Therefore, it's essential to constantly observe your plants to see how they progress. When you notice that the roots of the plug plants have begun to fill their containers, then regularly watering the plants will keep them in top condition. When the roots of your plug plants start poking out through the base and drainage holes, transfer them to larger pots to avoid stunted growth. Plug plants that grow very fast will need to be transferred to larger pots regularly. During the growth process, you may notice that your plants begin to bend towards the light. This is a process called phototropism and since it occurs due to natural circumstances, the best way to avoid it is by turning your containers around once in a while. Furthermore, some plug plants will rather grow tall than bushy. This can be prevented by drawing back the growing tips of perennials when they reach 10 cm high. Doing this will encourage the plant to shoot to its sides encouraging a bushy growth.
